Audrey remarked, ‘Here I’ve been waiting twenty years to dance with Fred Astaire, and what do I get? Mud!’ But the wet weather also proved serendipitous to the shooting of the balloon sequence: Donen was forced to film in a downpour, umbrellas were brought into the scene and it achieved an originality beyond the intended image in spring sunshine.
